Customized Gym Design: How to Choose the Right Flooring Mix

Customized Gym Design: How to Choose the Right Flooring For Your Gym

Proper flooring is essential to gym design. It can make or break the effectiveness of your workout areas, and have a big impact on the look and feel of your gym. Flooring should be customized to fit different exercises and workout zones.

To know exactly what type of flooring you should use in each part of your gym, you should partner with an expert.

The Right Mix of Flooring: Three Case Studies to Consider

At Advantage Sport & Fitness, we take flooring very seriously. We have a dedicated, in-house Flooring Specialist who takes a customized approach for each and every project.

We don’t believe in using a one-size-fits-all approach to our projects. Even two athletic training rooms in the same facility might not have the exact same flooring mix! For every project we take on, we make sure the flooring is in perfect alignment with the equipment the client has chosen and the intended use for each zone in the space.

For example, let’s explore three different projects we completed to see what a flooring mix might look like in your gym.

Olympic High School

For this project, we were tasked with designing the optimal space for weightlifting and heavy strength training. To accommodate these activities, we chose three different flooring types to give athletes the right texture, durability, and space to lift heavy and build muscle.

That’s why we went with Ecore Performance Beast 10.5mm rolled rubber. Ecore Flooring is made out of rubber waste and designed for wellness, fitness, and physical therapy settings. Not only is it sustainable, it absorbs shocks and helps users avoid slips and falls. It significantly reduces the risk of injuries and damages during repetitive, high-impact workouts — making it perfect for this project.

In designing this gym, we also used 11 inlaid, defined platforms to properly segment the lifting zone within the gym. The logo customization in the flooring at the entrance was a great opportunity to add branding to the project and show off that Olympic High School spirit.

Finally, we installed CP Green Turf to break up the space aesthetically and provide a soft area for functional pushing and pulling exercises. With the right flooring mix, you can easily provide a diverse and well-balanced fitness space for athletes and exercisers of all backgrounds.

Addison Ridge Apartments

At Addison Ridge Apartments in Fort Bragg, NC, we worked to create a stunning, functional fitness facility that incorporated high-quality equipment while paying homage to the area’s military ties. As a large project with different zones, we knew that we would need to use a variety of different flooring types to accommodate the main fitness center, group exercise areas, and outdoor exercise area.

For the main fitness center, which included cardio, an Escape Functional Frame, and Escape Power Racks, we went with Ecore Performance Beast 10.5 mm rolled rubber with four inlaid logo platforms. The inlaid logo platforms gave us a chance to add a flare of design and show off the apartment complex’s branding.

Also in the main fitness center, we installed CP Orange Turf with line markers. Turf is a great way to define an area for activities like pushing sleds, flipping tires, and other functional fitness exercises. For the group exercise area, we used Ecore Bounce 2 flooring. It has the appearance of real wood but is much easier to maintain.

The project also included an outdoor fitness space with CP Green Turf. It’s worth noting that outdoor turf applications require an external drainage system to divert rainfall away from any adjacent buildings.

Island Health & Fitness

Island Health & Fitness is a state-of-the-art 65,000 square foot complex offering a wide variety of wellness-based fitness classes, exercise spaces, and group programming. For this project, we helped outfit their strength training and weight lifting areas with high-quality equipment, design, and a mix of athletic flooring.

In the power rack area, we installed Ecore Performance Monster 22.5 mm rolled rubber flooring. This is a triple durometer system designed for extreme strength and conditioning and the ergonomic demands of aggressive functional training. It significantly reduces impact force, reduces heavy weight impact noise, lowers in-room impact sound, and actually returns energy to the user. We also installed three inlaid logo platforms to show off the facility’s branding.

For the strength and functional training area, we installed Ecore Performance Motivate 7.5 mm rolled rubber flooring. This is designed for light strength and conditioning, as well as functional training. We also installed CP Green Turf with line markers and a lunging lane. This mix of flooring nicely segments the space, creating zones for different activities.
