The University of South Carolina campus recreation department recently completed a 13,200 square foot flooring project. This was the first major flooring renovation since converting this underutilized basketball court to a campus recreation center weight room. The facility features (5) different types of flooring from Ecore Athletic, including: 9,700 sq. ft. of custom performance 14.5mm Rally rolled rubber, 2,000 sq. ft. of Everlast 8mm rolled rubber, 720 sq. ft. of 5mm speed and agility turf, 616 sq. ft. of performance Smash Tile with three inlaid platforms with logos, and 600 sq. ft. of Everlast 6mm wainscoting. One of the major concerns was noise traveling from the fitness center to the locker rooms and classroom spaces underneath. "When it was converted into a gym, the noise travelled very loudly below. So, there was a facility need to alleviate the noise issue," USC Fitness Director Michael Lagomarsine says, "we created in-ground platforms with smash tiles to solve both the sound issue and the need for platforms."
"WE CREATED IN-GROUND PLATFORMS WITH SMASH TILES TO SOLVE BOTH THE SOUND ISSUE AND THE NEED FOR PLATFORMS."

In addition to the flooring, USC also upgraded their cardio area with Precor Experience Series 800 Line ellipticals, treadmills, and recumbent and upright bikes, as well as two Expresso-GO Bikes. The addition of Assault Air Runners, Assault Air Bikes, and Concept II Rowers rounded out the facility's cardio options and transitioned the balcony cardio space into a HIIT cardio area. The upgrade also included Dynamic Fitness & Strength Olympic bars with USC branded end caps and custom Gamecocks logos on competition style bumper plates. "We were looking to provide amenities that were aligned with the current fitness trends. High-intensity interval training is popular with our patrons and they were looking for the space and equipment to execute those types of workouts. The indoor turf area provides a space for sled work, speed training, and agility work, while the Assault sprint treads, air bikes, and rowers are close enough to add sprint training to your workout," Lagomarsine adds. "Daren Burns, our sales representative, was there every step of the way to help. From the initial bid process to the actual install, he was there for support. The install team did a great job meeting our building requirements and time frame." Advantage worked with Mike Lathrop from Athletic Flooring Installers (AFI) to complete the flooring renovation in 5 days.
When asked about his experience working on this project, Daren Burns, Territory Sales Manager for Advantage, added:
“My experience working with Mike Lagomarsine, Brittoni Reynolds, and the entire USC staff is always top notch. Their vision for the recreation facilities at USC is crystal clear and their work ethic and passion is hard to match! Working with Cindy Lamson (our in-house Flooring Specialist), Erinn Latta and her Ecore Athletic team, we were able to address a few acoustical concerns and provide a top-of-the-line customized flooring solution that will have a lasting effect on the students, faculty, staff and equipment at USC.”
