TOP FITNESS TRENDS OF 2018

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recently released their predictions of the top fitness trends for 2018. Now in its twelfth year, the annual list provides vital information for health and fitness professionals as they make decisions to meet the ever-changing demands of the industry.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) emerged as the top predicted trend for 2018. HIIT consists of bursts of intense activity followed by a short period of rest or recovery. HIIT training can be achieved in many ways including varying speeds on a treadmill, utilizing functional training equipment, or plyometric and body weight moves.

The survey also seeks to differentiate between fitness trends (“a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving”) and fitness fads (“a fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period”). Comparing results from year-to-year can show the appearance and quick disappearance of what was viewed as a trend, but was just a fad.
