SHOWCASE: NORTHWEST FAMILY YMCA IN SYRACUSE

Construction on this brand-new, 100,000-square-foot building began in May of 2014, but the dream to build was sparked long before that time. According to a statement on the Northwest Family Y’s new website, the idea came from the local community.

“About 15 years ago, leading residents and business leaders in the northwestern part of Onondaga County decided they wanted a Y in their neighborhood. With guidance from the Greater Syracuse YMCA, they formed a board of volunteers to survey community needs, identify an appropriate site, develop building plans and gather the resources needed. In-depth surveys and analysis found that the area lacks sufficient recreational facilities and wellness programs for children, adolescents, families and adults.”

Volunteers from the community created “The Campaign for our New Y” to raise the $6 million needed to fund the project.

The new facility includes: an aquatic center with a family pool, a lap pool, and a therapy pool; three basketball courts and multiple smaller courts; an indoor track; a turf practice field; a teen/tween center that will double as a gathering place for seniors; an arts and music center; a bicycling studio; a wellness center dedicated to helping cancer survivors recover; and areas for group exercise, weightlifting and cardiovascular exercise.

In the fitness area, the combination of over 70 cardio stations (57 of which are networked Precor P80 models), 15 Precor Discovery Selectorized Strength & Discovery Plate Loaded Stations, and 6 Expresso Bikes gives members the opportunity to make huge strides toward their personal wellness goals.
